Silent Night

The story of how the Christmas carol "Silent Night" was composed began with a broken church organ.

It was Christmas Eve in the Austrian Alps.  Father Joseph Mohr was preparing for the midnight service at the newly constructed Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, a Tyrol village near Salzburg.  He was worried because the church organ was broken.  So he thought about writing a new song that could be sung without the organ.  He wrote the words “Silent night, holy night, all is calm, all is bright…” Then he took the text to his organist, Franz Gruber and asked him to compose a simple tune.

So, on the evening of December 24, 1818, “Silent Night” was sung for the first time as a duet accompanied by a guitar.

Were it not for a broken organ, there would never have been the Christmas carol “Silent Night”.

Romans 8:28 – “…all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.”

SILENT NIGHT

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright. Round yon virgin mother and child; Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace; Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight. Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing “Alleluiah.  Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night, Wondrous star, lend thy light. With the angels, let us sing, Alleluiah to our King. Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace. Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth; Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
