Our Work Shapes Us

Here I am again in front of my desktop reminiscing the time when I was still working. I started working when I was barely 19 years old, after finishing one year Secretarial course.   I was a working student for about two years, working as secretary in various companies during  daytime, while working on my Commerce degree in the evening.  After earning my bachelor's degree in Commerce, I applied to several companies and was able to work again initially as secretary, then  moved on to other jobs in other companies and in my final years in my last job, I was assigned to a branch  office located near my home.  There I worked initially as cashier where I was able to learn how to use the  Retail POS System and thus experienced a job that  was focused on receiving payments from customers and balancing the cash and checks  received against  the official receipts issued for the payments.

I am grateful to our Lord for everything He allowed to come my way.  I want to quote Craig Brian Larson, a Christian minister and editor who wrote:   “All my jobs have shaped me…work along with family relationships and suffering is one of the fundamental chisels by which God shapes us into his image and prepares us for the age to come.  Work addresses character, issues of faithfulness, responsibility, diligence, submission to authority, and obedience.  It requires us to depend on God for wisdom to overcome problems and strength to overcome fatigue.”

Eccl. 5:19 – Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift of God.
