Does the former Pres. Marcos deserve a hero's burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani?
For me, this particular subject is a non-issue. I am just disappointed that in the survey done at TV Patrol last week on the subject, more people favored the burial of the late former President Marcos at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani. This made me think that the people who had participated in this text votes survey were the people who were not born yet during the Martial Law or that they were Martial Law babies who never knew what it was like to live during that time, or that if they were already conscious about that, maybe they were just like some of the Filipinos who easily forget history.
I hope people will not get me wrong; that people will not think that I am one of those who would rather dwell in the past and don't want to move forward. It is just that I am a realist. Ok, the Martial Law regime of Ferdinand Marcos is past. But just because it is past is not a reason for us to forget what a Libingan Ng Mga Bayani is for.
The atrocities that former President Marcos was known for during the martial law regime, his fake medals, his abuse of power, are they not enough reasons for him not to have a place at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani?
But come to think of it, one good thing that resulted from former President Marcos' abuse of power and other bad things he did was that the Filipinos, who by nature are long suffering, were so ignited that is why “people power” happened.
