How do you feel about Pacquiao’s latest title defense against Shane Mosley?
The title above is the next INBOX World question of The Philippine Star, my favorite daily.
As far as I can remember, the first time I watched Pacquiao fight was in 2005 when he lost to Erik Morales. Before that fight, I have heard that Pacquiao was a very good boxer, and Filipino fans have been raving about him. That was why for the first time, I really made it a point to watch him. But it was disappointing, because at that time, he lost. I remember him crying after that loss, saying that he failed the Filipino people. My sympathies went to him, not because he lost, but because I felt he really wanted his countrymen to be proud of him. I remember, after the fight, he was interviewed by Korina Sanchez, and he was sporting a cut above his left eyebrow. He said the reason he lost was because after he was cut badly, he could no longer see very well because the cut was bleeding.
But that was his last loss. From that time on, he won all his fights. I was so exhilarated every time he fights, because he is really a very good fighter. His power and speed are amazing. And he always made sure that he would give people their money’s worth.
Several months before his fight with Mosley, I would always read write ups about Sugar Shane Mosley. I have read so many things about Mosley being a dangerous opponent, that it is the first time that Pacquiao will be against an African American boxer, so Pacquiao is not so familiar with the fighting style of African American boxers, that Mosley is the more experienced boxer having been a pro since 1993, two years before Pacquiao became one. Furthermore, Mosley was the only boxer who was able to knock down Margarito; we know that Pacquiao was unable to knock down Margarito, and this made us believe that Mosley was stronger than Pacquiao. On the other hand, Mosley has never been knocked out, while Pacquiao was floored five times in his earlier fights. And the most frightening is Mosley fights like Marquez. And all of us Pacquiao fans saw how it was when Pacquiao and Marquez fought in 2008. At the end of that fight with Marquez, we were not sure who the winner was, and even Pacquiao seemed surprised when it was announced that he won by split decision.
So, last Sunday, when all of us Pacquiao fans watched, we were expecting a very good fight. But we saw that it was a boring fight because Mosley barely engaged after he was knocked down in the third round. He seemed fearful to be hit again, so all he did was run away. Pacquiao is not to be blamed for the fight being boring, Mosley is a disappointment. All the write ups about Mosley being a dangerous fighter are all media hype to sell the fight, as what my good friend had said.
