President Aquino's Porche
When I first heard about criticisms on President Noynoy Aquino’s new purchase, the P4.5 million Porsche, my first reaction was, what’s wrong with that? President Aquino used his personal funds for the purchase of the pre-owned luxury car. It was not government money. So why compare his
purchase of the luxury car to the Le Cirque dinner of the former
President and now Congresswoman Gloria Arroyo? He is a bachelor and a
luxury car is what he desires for himself.
But come to think of it, President Aquino is not just a rich private individual. He may think that there’s nothing wrong with his purchasing a very expensive car. But how about the poor? Surely, they would think that the President they voted for had been unfeeling of their plight; that while they had hard time coping with life, barely making both ends meet, here, their President whom they have pinned their hopes on, is blatantly displaying his luxury car. He is the leader of an impoverished country. And as such, he should empathize with the people he is serving. He must be sensitive to public opinion.
I didn't know how and didn't mind giving my opinion earlier. But I just suddenly felt, after reading your blog that if Cory were alive today she would have opposed such an expensive buy amidst the squalor & need of the Filipino people he promised to serve. I read sometime ago that Cory even refused Kris' offer of more expensive things after buying her an expensive & comfortable bed & a Toyota Grandia. So very like Cory, very sensitive of public opinion. (comment from Linda Cerna)
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteIt seems, there is nothing wrong with the purchase of Pnoy's luxury car. But you have a good point, he should empathize with the people he is serving. If I were in his position, I rather buy a big car (a bus or something), not a single luxury car, which I guess can only accommodate 2 persons. At least with a bus, I can give a free ride to more people. (comment from Vic)
