Church clothes
Many years ago, when my daughters were still kids, we always went to church in our “Sunday best”. We were encouraged by our pastor that if we have better clothes to wear, then wear them to church. The idea behind this
is that the church is the place where we worship God and fellowship with
other Christians.
I hope I am not offending anybody, but as Christians, we must respect God’s sanctuary. We must enter it with a respectful attitude. One way of doing it is to dress properly. It makes me sad to see some people in church on Sundays wearing shorts or slippers as if they are just going out for jogging, outing or having a picnic, or they are overdressed as if they are going to a formal gathering.
Is it not that if we have a job interview or an appointment with a company executive, or a meeting with a government official, we want to look our best? We are very particular with our appearance - our face, our hair, our clothes and our shoes. Do we think that the people we will meet in the said offices are more important than God? So, why is it that some people go to church wearing shabby clothes, when in fact they have better clothes to wear? Don’t they know that wearing shabby clothes in church shows disrespect to the God that they are worshipping? We do not call the church as the House of God for nothing.
I hope I am not misunderstood. I don’t look down on those who dress shabbily because they have less in life. God loves all people equally, that’s for sure. My point is when a person goes to church, if he has better clothes to wear, then he should wear them to church.
We must always remember that our physical presentation to God speaks volumes about how we reverence Him.
